Q: How can people predict things if astrology doesn't work?

Krishna: Knowledge, expertise, keen observation, understanding of behaviours of different people in different situations, critical thinking -  all these things help you in predicting things.
An expert doctor can guess and tell what his patient is suffering from based on the symptoms and analyses of his general health.
A stock market 'expert' who follows them keenly can predict stock market trends fairly accurately based on several parameters.
A scientist  can tell what changes can occur in the climate in the next few years based on the models he develops, provided the model is using correct and reliable data.
We call this informed imagination or educated guess work.

Astrology doesn't work because it is based on unrelated, unconnected and unreliable things.
Let me now tell you an interesting story. Some of my family members watch TV entertainment programmes. One Sunday last month I went to my sister's home and I too watched a programme along with my sister's family there.
The programme was based on  games and entertainment and elimination occurs at each level.
Two teams won there. Then the following week these two teams will fight to win.
I told my relatives which team would win next week. They were not happy because I gave their favourite team a thumbs down. "How can you tell without knowing anything about them? You don't watch TV. You don't know anything about these people. Just based on one programme, how could you predict like that?", They asked me.
Then I told them, "Wait till next week. Watch the programme and let me know who won".
To their surprise, my prediction came true. I was confident that that would definitely happen!
Now I am not an astrologer. My relatives wanted to know how, 'without any knowledge on TV actors' I predicted the outcome correctly.
I asked them , "Did J (an actress) participate in this episode? I am sure she didn't."
"No, she didn't participate in this game show", they told me.
"Because during the earlier episode another actor 'misbehaved' with her, I continued with my explanation.   A married woman with children feels very uncomfortable if somebody misbehaves with her live on TV. Although she grinned and bore it, her facial expressions told me she was very unhappy about the incident. Most people watching entertainment programmes don't notice such things while enjoying shows like these. Even if they notice, they think it is okay and laugh them off as normal. But  I was sure the actress would find an excuse the next week and wouldn't  participate in the next event.
I was correct in my assessment.
Without one of the  good  participants, the chances of winning become less.
Then the other team was very passionate ( it showed) and good at dancing and better than this team and can score more points. Their choreographer too 's better than this one's.    Your favourite team 's not very intense in their zealousness. They were only 'superficial' and their talent was shallow.
Just one episode is enough   to assess this situation, you need not be a regular viewer and follower to predict the outcomes in a superficial world like TV", I told my relatives.
Now tell me, do you need expertise to predict the outcomes in shallow things? NO!
If scientists can predict complicated things well, they can predict  simple things with ease.
If you learn the psychology of people, you can 'predict their futures' and get away with it even if you 're wrong! That is what astrologers usually do!
