Only I will write my story of Art
I read recently that some French artists during the "Golden Age of Painting" faught against art crtics and shows because they felt all outside forces were dangerous if they "influence" their work. I feel there is a lot of truth in it.
All individuals don't think alike. The art and literature work people do reflects their individual thinking. This automatically sets standards and measurements for the people who do works of art. That is what makes literature and art so rich and unique.
What I do represents me and my thoughts. My work is an extension of me. Another person coming from another place and background might have different views & ideas from mine. If I listen to others and follow their instructions, it means that I am losing my identity in art and becoming that " other persons" and allowing my art to take the shape of those critics' world of art and not mine. What makes this world unique is - different people can present a single idea in different ways. If an art critique or an adviser "counsels" everybody and if all of them listen to him and follow his " correct " way of representing the art, all the art works look alike and the art world stagnates. I will give an example here. Damien Hirst deals with skulls frequently. As he is famous and critics and buyers praise his work, several artists started following him ( and some of them became famous too! ). As a result the variety in art got killed
and seeing the same type of art over and over again became very boring and all the charm and different hallmarks of various artists also got lost and the art world became poorer!
And I have also seen some of the students of the great masters and art teachers here in India just following their teachers and doing art in the same way as their masters did. You cannot differentiate between the art of these students and that of their masters! I think the students in these cases are unable to come out of the shadows of their masters and therefore are unable to see things clearly and grow as individual artists. That is really bad for art.
Yes, we can hear what critics and others say about our work, think about it, but we should follow only what our hearts and minds say is the right way to deal with our work. If we fear we might not sell our work or that critics - who are usually influenced by market trends and their environment and therefore are biased in their views - might rip our work apart - this could control our creating process and impact our self-understanding as artists. We lose all our freedom, individuality and as a result we stop growing as artists.
Juries, galleries, shows, critics, competitions and all other external influences are dangerous - they only make us perform - not create and they will kill us as unique human beings and make us artists created by this world.
Yes, I want to go back to the "Golden Age of Painting". I agree with masters like Piccasso and Monet. I will never allow somebody else's view boss over mine because I don't want to lose my identity and that special artistic signature of mine. My art - like all art - is autobiographical. I will not allow others to write my story.

You did the right thing, Minnie. You didn't lose your identity & your way of presenting your work.
These days every body thinks he or she is an expert in art & start giving you "advice". As soon as they come to know that I am not a trained artist, they start "counseling" me. I smile, hear every thing they say& think about it.
But I found most of them don't know how to present themes from science in the right way. So I ignore them most of the time & I know I am doing the right thing. But at the same time, I learned a few techniques like "glazing" that helped me through art classes on the internet. So my learning is limited to techniques that improve my presentation. And I will decide what work to do & how to present it. In this regard I will not allow others to interfere with my work.

She looked at my art and said she could make me into a real artist by taking her classes. I said 'no thanks'. I explained to her that while she taught a set formula way of painting that all the works of the students came out about the same. They were not unique or different. She said my art would not be worth anything that it took too long to figure things out individually. I said...maybe...but I'll accept that. She was perplexed at why I did not consider her work creative..that's because it wasn't. My work may never be famous, it maynot even be creative....but it won't look like a formula was used to paint it.

You're on the right track Minnie! I remember when I was doing correspondence art courses with Walter Foster Inc,and Pratt Institute in America,everything was so mundane and really pedantic. Three years ago I purchased
5000 dollars worth of books by the best people on art in the publication business,but after studying all of them
I have returned to what I want to depict in my style only,giving all those artists and their publications a boot.
I never speak to so called professionals in the game, because I get the feeling that none of them know anything,and they are just trying to
cash in on some poor collectors gullibility to make a fast buck.I come from a background of wealthy and high
positioned people,who would give you something free just because you said you liked it.
Moneymaking is for CHARLATANS and good luck to their CON ARTISTS, who want to make hay while the sun
shines....PRINCE

Two friends who did courses in art in two different universities gave me two different & conflicting advises. One friend who was trained in UK told me to keep on working with my brush until I get the desired effect. "It sometimes takes even days while working with oils to get the effect. Keep on stroking to get the picture you want" , he said. Another friend who studied art in India said, " If you use brush excessively, the brightness of colour diminishes. The painting won't look good. Brush strokes should be as minimum as possible." Isn't it confusing?
Yes, people confuse you by giving all sorts of advices.

I don't follow any rules! I am a self taught artist. I deal mostly with science themes. Only I know how to represent my work in the way i want to. How can a person who deals with only art tell me how to present my science themes in the way he wants to? How can a person coming from another culture & part of the world tell me to follow his rules originated in his surroundings? I will lose my unique signature if I follow rules set by others.
