Not everything painted is a painting.

Sometimes I use to work with interior designers, which commission from me some work. Lately the designer gave me some striped fabric, which she used for pillows on the coach, and ask me to produce the same pattern on the canvas. I did. She, as well as her customers admired my "painting" very much.  And then it stracked me, that not everything painted is a painting. By the painting I mean a thing that belongs to Fine art. Some of the paintings belong to other categories - decorations, kraft.

Do we distingush it?

Hello, Netta. Glad to hear from you again.
If you do a work with an artistic mind & heart, it will be art even if it is a straight line or just a small point. Even decorative pieces & craft works can be called works of art if they fit the criteria. I did a work titled "Optimism" which is just a small white dot on a black canvas. The black canvas is darkness & the white dot is optimism. It is the optimism that drives you forward when you are in darkness. The work has a lot of meaning & symbolism. I call it a piece of art because lot of thinking & effort went into it & my artistic mind was completely involved during the process of creating it.
Even if you copy something, you have to do it artistically. Your work was admired because you did it just like a print.
I call it art too!
This is the picture of my painting:

Description (Optimism): When there is complete darkness – represented by the colour black in the painting – only one thing can make you move forward and come out of that misery. It may be extremely small but highly potent – it is the optimism in you (white dot). Without this minute dot in its mind, mankind cannot move forward when faced with difficulties.
Dear Dr. Krishna:
The painting you painted conveys a certain messege, a concept. This what distingushes art from intertaiment or kraft. Yes, perhaps, I can argue the way you present your concept, or state of mind. I can price the originality of the idea, or critisize its simplistic symbolism, but I'll never relate to the work other then to art.
The strapes that I painted is not art. Just a decorative piece to match the pillows on the soffa.

Fortunately I am always an optimistic person. I never think darkness surrounding me is not good. It makes me courageous, strong, enlightened & a humane being.
Netta, it is up to you to think whether what you did is art or not. Another member here once said while participating in a discussion that copying something is also some sort of art. The concept differs from person to person. There are various types of art & decorative art is one of them.

the white dot could convey lonliness...if one is the white dot and if one is the blackened space... it could convey being positive in a blackened crises...if this work represents optimism...then ones soul must be black to gaze at available light outside oneself to see a white dot or star...like me DR Krishna your moods maybe low and you see available light or idea to feel happy
