Science, Art, Litt, Science based Art & Science Communication
The College of Saint Elizabeth will open its spring semester with The Abstract Universe:Microcosm/Macrocosm, a multi-disciplinary program, that will examine the relationship between art and science.
From January to April 2012, CSE presents an art exhibition and related events that begins with an opening reception at the Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery, on Monday, Jan. 23, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
The exhibition reveals how astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and other scientific fields inspired contemporary artists when they created their abstract paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, mixed media pieces, musical works, digital films, and animation sequences.
In addition, the exhibition presents works from the scientific community that are, in turn, inspired by art and artistic techniques. The exhibition closes April 15.
At 7:15 p.m., immediately following the Jan. 23 opening, a film presentation and a panel discussion takes place. The presentation and discussion highlights award-winning Toronto filmmaker Kevin Sullivan and his new documentary, Out of the Shadows, which reveals how a Rembrandt painting was uncovered and authenticated through the use of advanced scientific technology.
After the film, Virginia Fabbri Butera, Ph.D., Director of the Maloney Art Gallery, interviews Mr. Sullivan and three other artists in the exhibition, about their fascination with, and merging of, science and their art forms. These events are free and open to the public.
On Thursday, April 12, 2012, CSE hosts a program, When Art and Science Collaborate for high school students that includes mini-presentations and workshops and focuses on the different aspects of the intersection between art and science. The presenters are selected from the fields of science, art, dance, music and theater.
