SCI-ART LAB

Science, Art, Litt, Science based Art & Science Communication

Now you can have Your Genome Made Into a Piece of Art and and hang it on the walls of your living room!

In the race to uncover the structure of DNA, the molecule of life, researchers bickered over how its strands fit together in three-dimensional space. James Watson and Francis Crick won this race.
Several years later, now, Ottawa-based DNA11 (Ahmed and his business partner Adrian Salamunovic formed DNA11) is moving molecules out of the lab and into the home, creating personalized works of DNA art and uncovering a modern version of DNA’s functional beauty, which Watson, Crick and Wilkins unlocked decades ago. They are using it as a way to fuse their passions of genomics and art and expose more people to genomics.
They ask you to provide your DNA. DNA11 sends you a swab kit that you use to transfer cheek cells to a collection card, which you then send back to the company. DNA11 begins processing the sample with 8 different makers, which insures unique canvas art for each customer. After amplifying the unique DNA bands (so there’s enough DNA to visualize), separating them according to size using an electric field (so the molecules don’t lump together), and staining them with UV dye (to highlight the DNA that’s there), the company takes a digital image and prints the DNA profile on a canvas.
Now you can have your own DNA art in various forms!
You can see their work and get your DNA art done by contacting them through their website: http://labs.dna11.com/

The world's smallest alphabet written with DNA

DNA alphabet

It is not fiction. It's a real alphabet, complete with special characters, written in DNA.

Do you think scientists and geneticists are concerned only with stem cells or clones? Nothing. They enjoy a typographic design from time to time. This even typographical!

Scientists at the Wyss Institute (Harvard), recently created an alphabet with 107 elements, including numbers, special characters and emoticons , made with fragments of DNA. Called affectionately DNA Sans , the typeface family has letters that measure 103 nanometers high. To give you an idea, a nanometer (nm) corresponding to one millionth of a millimeter or one billionth of a meter. Or try to get your ruler.

As the letters were "framed"?

If you remember from biology class, you know that DNA is composed of a double helix twist.Researchers descompactaram this helix and cut into small pieces. But stretches of DNA are not randomly combined. Some excerpts are only combine with other complementary. Then the game has been combined with other DNA fragments complementary so that when united, generate the desired shape of the letter. Simple as playing Lego.

Got it? Not? See the video below:

And what use it in the future?

Scientists say that being able to create specific shapes on a molecular scale can assist in the preparation of medicines.

Thank you for posting interesting DNA letters, Lucia.
