It is extremely difficult to get a genuine Ph.D. (Doctorate). After five-seven years of exhaustive work and study in sciences which drain both your physical and mental strengths, after going through the fire of innumerable tests and peer reviews you get these degrees. You gain a lot and become a specialist in the subject. It teaches you how to study, observe, reason and then come to a conclusion. It is up to the person who got it how well he can use this knowledge. He can either use it for the benefit of mankind or misuse it inviting the wrath of the world. Knowledge is never going to be a waste. If imagination and intuition gives you unlimited freedom, the knowledge gained through these studies puts them in the right perspective and tells you how to use them in the correct way that can benefit the world. Without these constructive studies, the raw imagination/intuition/knowledge is like a kite flying in a strong wind - or a ship without a compass - both are directionless!!
On the other hand there are people who have obtained these skills without undergoing the tests - but they are very few and extremely rare!
The prefix "Dr" tells you that the person had undergone the most difficult and grueling tests of the highest order in academic terms and came out with flying colours and that he could be trusted with the subject. It invites respect as it is the mark of great skill.
Some women deliberately flaunt it to avoid unnecessary attention and trouble and get the respect they deserve from men! This strategy really works!
