Q: What is overthinking?

Krishna: :)
'Overthinking' is a word that is mostly based on perception.

According to some people, ''Overthinking is simply what its name suggests – thinking too much. Overthinking is going over the same thought again and again, analysing the simplest of situations or events until all sense of proportion has gone''.

But there isn't anything called overthinking in my world.
Scientists think a lot about the problems they are dealing with. They will have them in their complete  grip. They thoroughly go through each step, examine every aspect,  scan each word, probe  all the action, scrutinize reactions, search for more data, inspect, investigate, explore, go over and over again to gain insights and make things certain.  Until they find solutions to the problems they are dealing with,  they won't eat,  drink, or even talk. They forget to sleep too!
They get new insights into  things by analysing  them extensively using their genuine knowledge. Only by using their brain power to full capacity can they achieve success.

The same is true for writers, poets, and artists too.
Until I finalize my poems and articles and put them on paper, until I put my ideas on canvas sheets, I can't stop thinking about them! I can't sleep at all!
Is this overthinking? NO! you have to analyse some things very deeply to get insights into things, and see things no one has seen before.

Polymaths have to think 24 hours a day! Their brain burns like hell.

You have to analyse things, behaviours deeply to make course corrections in life.
You have to think extensively about things in the past to learn lessons and not repeat mistakes.
You have to think about your future thoroughly to plan things correctly.

Then what is too much thinking?
When the thinking  gets into negative aspects. When it makes you worry too much, depressed.
Problem-solving involves thinking about a solution. Overthinking involves dwelling on the problem, not the solution.

Healthy self-reflection is about learning something about yourself or gaining a new perspective about a situation. It's purposeful.

Overthinking involves dwelling on how bad you feel and thinking about all the things you have no control over. It won't help you develop a new insight.

The difference between problem-solving, self-reflection, and overthinking isn't about the amount of time you spend in deep thought. Time spent developing creative solutions or learning from your behaviour is productive. But time spent overthinking, whether it's 10 minutes or 10 hours or 10 days, won't enhance your life.

Overthinking is that which is bad for you and it does nothing to prevent or solve problems.
