SCI-ART LAB

Science, Art, Litt, Science based Art & Science Communication

We want to give information on science-art courses around the world. kkArtLab is one of the sites where you can learn about Bioptical art. This is a free course and started on experimental basis. If this succeeds - as artists find it too technical to follow and we are trying to simplify it - we will start courses in Biology and other science subject based art.
1. You can learn Bioptical art taught by Mr. Iliescu, who has more than fifty years of experience in the Bioptical art research, here:

2. Another site which is trying to give some training is Art-Science-gallery
You can visit it here:

3. Ph.D. in science-art:

UT Dallas has just announced the new PhD at the University of Texas, Dallas which seeks to enable research and education that couples the Arts and Humanities with the Sciences and Engineering. They are seeking first rate candidates from diverse backgrounds (Academia, Private Industry, Non Governmental Organizations, Make and Hacker collectives) within the ATEC Arts and Technology PhD Program.

Geography course explores how the geosciences influence art

Early humans in France and Spain used bumps and crevasses in limestone caves to suggest a bison's haunch or the curve of a horse's neck. Two millennia later, Leonardo da Vinci depicted precise geological formations such as fault lines, sediment layers and bedrock.

Vatche Tchakerian, Geography professor and head of the department, investigates this connection between artist and landscape in his First-Year Seminar course, Earth Art: Geosciences and the Arts. "We explore how geography, geomorphology, geology and the environment are represented in the major art movements from prehistory to today," Tchakerian says. "We look at paintings, for example, to identify what kind of geosciences information can we identify. Are they accurate? What does the information convey to the viewer?"

In one exercise students trace the major landscape features in Giovanni Bellini's St. Francis in the Desert (1480–85) and identify features such as a cliff face, ravine, flood plain, weathering, sedimentary rocks, rock varnish, and other geomorphological elements.

"After taking the course, I want my students throughout their lives to go to museums, to look at paintings with a new perspective." And in turn he wants this course to train geosciences students to examine their environment with the insight of an artist's eye. "I want to help future scientists to become more perceptive, more aware of the details around them."

One of the highlights in art history has to be the late 18th and 19th centuries. The 'new' science of geology and Darwin's theories on the origin and evolution of life coincide in time with the landscape painters of Great Britain, he says. "Art reflected the amazing scientific discoveries at that time." The Hudson School in the United States also emerged, succeeded by the modern perspective of landscape found in the works of painters like Georgia O'Keefe and David Hockney and contemporary works like Robert Smithson's giant earthwork, Spiral Jetty.

"The link between geosciences and art constantly reflect each other," he says. Google Earth artists, for example, use satellite imagery to create landscape paintings that range from pictorial to expressionistic. "A famous example is Angry Tundra. The painting depicts the Siberian tundra melting and releasing methane gas, which is also evident in the real-time satellite image."

Imagine the “Impossible”

The Sci|Art NanoLab is a highly competitive summer program for high school students interested in collaborating with diverse and notable minds to challenge traditional, polarized perspectives of the arts and sciences. This program is open to high school students that are graduating seniors or will be juniors and seniors in the fall. Throughout the 2-week intensive program, students will make connections between cutting edge scientific research, popular culture and contemporary arts. Lab visits, workshops, hands-on experiments, and meetings with world renowned scientists will be balanced with visits to museums, daily movie screenings and meetings with famous contemporary artists who collaborate with scientists. A team of science and art graduate students will lead participants.

Throughout the two weeks, students will be developing presentations of group research projects in which they imagine the "impossible."

Sponsored by UCLA ART|SCI Center, Department of Design | Media Arts and the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) , the Sci|Art Nanolab focuses on multi-disciplinary collaborations exploring the possibilities and implications of scientific and technological innovation. Running in parallel with the NanoSystems Chemistry and Engineering Research (NanoCER) program at CNSI and the Design | Media Arts Institute at the Broad Arts Center, Sci | Art NanoLab students will benefit from exposure and collaboration with art and science faculty and students participating in this program's team-based interdisciplinary nanoscience research. You can also view the Sci | Art NanoLab website.

Admission to the program is by instructor consent. As part of the application process, applicants will be asked to submit a 500-word essay. View the essay topics for more information about the essay process. Although not required, they strongly encourage students to submit a Letter of Recommendation from a teacher or counselor. Recommenders may submit their comments via email. Please remember that even after you have been approved, official enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.
