The 2011 LHI Art-Sci Symposium, LAND AS LAB, took place at Land Heritage Institute | LHI on the southernmost edge of San Antonio, TX on Saturday, September 3, 2011 following a benefit for LHI on the banks of the San Antonio River at the cusp of the newly opened Mission Reach of the San Antonio River Improvements Project in front of the San Antonio River Authority on Friday night with music by Buttercup and projections across the river by the Arid Lands Institute of Burbank, CA. The symposium was threaded with narrative by San Antonio art writer/critic/curator Anjali Gupta and art historian/Pastelogram founder Ariel Evans (Austin, TX); symposium speakers were Hadley and Peter Arnold, Arid Lands Institute; Dr. Elizabeth de la Portilla and Don Jacinto Madrigal (San Antonio); Jennifer Monson, iLAND (New York, NY); Nancy Zastudil, PLAND (Tres Piedras, NM); Dr. Alston Thoms (College Station, TX); Kirsten Stoltz, M12 (Yuma, CO); San Antonio iartists Buster Graybill and Chris Sauter; invasive species specialist Dr. Kelly Lyons (San Antonio). Conceived and coordinated by Dr. Penelope Boyer, LHI Art-Sci Projects Director.
