Science, Art, Litt, Science based Art & Science Communication
Alyce Santoro, 2006 Lang College Visiting Artist, presented a talk on her work at the intersection of art and science, highlighting the value of interdisciplinary thinking, as part of incoming student orientation. Santoro refers to her multimedia works as "philosoprops", devices that can be used to spark a dialog around themes of science, philosophy, ecology, and social action. The lecture was followed by a panel discussion with Ivan Raykoff, Professor of Music, musician, and cultural critic; Katayoun Chamany, Professor of Biology; Simonetta Moro, artist and Professor of Fine Art; and Margo Jefferson, Professor of Writing and cultural critic for the New York Times.
The ideas presented during the lecture are further elaborated Santoro's 2013 publication PHILOSOPROPS: A UNIFIED FIELD GUIDE: http://alycesantoro.com/philosoprops_book.html
