Who are the top artists at art fairs?

TOP ARTISTS AT ART FAIRS

According to research by Artprice, 92% of the top artists at international art fairs still hail from outside Asia.

The artists who are most frequently presented by galleries (by more than 50 galleries) at the top international art fairs from mid 2007 to mid 2008 are ranked as follows:

* Andy Warhol (133 times),
* Pablo Picasso (130 times),
* Joan Miro (98 times),
* Antoni Tapies (80),
* Sol Lewitt, Sam Francis, Robert Rauschenberg, Lucio
Fontana, Henri Matisse (62),
* Alexander Calder, David Hockney, Frank Stella, Tom Wesselmann, Roy Lichtenstein, Marc Chagall, Jean Dubuffet, Fernand Léger, Alighiero Boetti, Eduardo Chillida, Mimmo Paladino,
Arman, Jannis Kounellis, Henri Moore and Georg Baselitz (50
times).

These are clearly the stars of the art market that figure massively at the top the list.

When the list is expanded to show artists presented by at least 19 galleries, we find that the list of 55 artists is, once again, dominated by American artists. Artists from Asia represent only 8% of this list.

* US artists: 42% of the population (apart from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Sean Scully previously mentioned,we find Kiki Smith, Donald Baechler, Richard Prince, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Tony Oursler, Julian Schnabel and John Chamberlain).
* Germans arrive in second place with 14% of the artists including Günther Förg and Stephan Balkenhol, but also Thomas Ruff, Anselm Kiefer, Jörg Immendorff, Rosemarie Trockel and Bernd & Hilla Becher.
* In third place, the Italians and British (11% each)
* Spain and China (5% each), followed by
* Switzerland (4%),
* Japan (3%),
* Belgium and Portugal (2% each) and
* Brazil (1%).

Is this not similar to my blog sometime ago about top 100 artists as ranked by 'The Times' newspaper and 'Saatchi Art Gallery' which you dismissed derisively? :-)
Hello, this was done differently. You are complaining without noticing the difference. In the Saatchi selection members vote. I was invited to vote by saatchi gallery. I refused to vote because the artists selected were only Western artists. Saatci Gallery selected the artists & didn't include any Asian or Indian artists. Did they mean there weren't any great artists in India or the East? That was why I protested. I even sent a very strongly worded message to Saatchi gallery. That was why I dismissed the Saatchi list you posted.
Here in this article the top artists were selected by taking the criteria of participation of artists in the fairs. Nobody is selecting them. It means Asian or Indian artists are not taking part properly in the fairs! It is the fault of the artists & not the selectors! I want to bring it to the notice of the artists here. That is why I posted this discussion. I hope now you noticed the difference!

Saatchi's list is based on biased perception & this list is based on reality.

Saatchi's list is based on biased perception & this one is based on reality. There is a lot of difference between these two lists!

Good information Dr.Krishna,
the major reason for American artists featuring so high, is basically because most of the top buyers today;
are American.I do get into dialogue sometimes with international curators and they tell me that,people here
in India are confused about their art.First they called S'ouza the Indian Picasso,then switched to calling Hussain
that.These sort of things send out wrong signals to the world at large.Also" the art in India lacks taste", according
to foreign gallerists,curators and artists. Of course people like Subodh Gupta and Anish Kapoor have done
quite well thanks to patronage from NRI buyers. Many people in India and abroad ask me one singular
question."What do you think is good art"? And my answer! Anything that has aesthetics!.....PRINCE
