In reality, women especially those who become mothers, must multi-task. So much so, that they do not have the time as Ninon said to put into thier art. The passion for it is there, but the time is not allotted. Perhaps it must be relegated to single women to reach those career heights. But I fear the true heart and soul of charity, sacrifice and selfless service and enduring love lies in the heart of a mother...someone who would give up anything, even her life, for someone else. That is not to say that fathers do not sacrifice or love their children also, but very few are called upon to do the meneal tasks, and put in the tireless hours of nurturing a child. Add wage earning to the modern wife and you get a better picture of the lack of time that Ninon was talking about. During all the years I worked, traveled, and reared my children I considered myself successful to finish work to have to show....market it? I laugh. Better at it? Just 'at it' might be the item in question. In my own little corner of the world, I am well known....just not worldwide (never really tried to be worldwide). I have very little of my pieces left, it sold locally. I am happy for that, but I have nothing to show now for much of the sacrifice that it took to steal the time to paint. You see...for me I think that I had to steal the time to do art from my primary jobs of mother, wife and wage earner.....for the man it is his life's work and a way must be made for his genius to develop. Whether this difference in treatment is my limited view or the general view of society...I think it is probably true.
Perhaps we must first erase the 'guilt' women sometimes feel for ignoring other tasks to develop their talents. I do not know how we will do that. A single man who is a very successful executive hires someone to take care of household duties. A woman in the same circumstance is rediculed if she does not take care of those tasks herself. I don't know how to change that. A career oriented mother who does not care for her own children is labled a 'bad mother' yet a father who stays away days and weeks on business trips is not labled a 'bad father' but rather a good provider; and a celebration is held because he got the deal. I don't know how to change that. A woman who adopts the horrible personal hygene habits of Michael Angelo and delves whole heartedly into her work is considered lazy and slothful, yet Michael Angelo was considered excentric and a genius whose mistress was his art. I don't know how to change that. Just name one woman (married and with children) who is considered a great film maker. I can't think of any at all. Are women agressive enough? Are women 'mad' enough? Are women talented enough? Are women focused enough? Can the time be made in our hearts and minds for a woman's artistic genius to flourish? Or, do women simply go unnoticed? I don't know.
I began my art career as a young woman. I wanted to hide the fact in my signature that I was a woman, so as to give the viewer a more equal footing on deciding the validity of my work. I don't think that men have the edge on passion when it comes to art, but just watch the movie on Modigliani, Picasso, Renoir and yikes they had such a mad passion. To me Art is like eating wonderful food, loving, living. I love to dissect and absorb it. I am crazy about the different views that sculpture gives. It is such a mind-blower going to 3-dimensions and such myriad of views. I have met such passionate people on ning.com and have treasured their friendships. I do feel that many of them have graced my studio and are my friends. Love in art, Lila
I think some of them were mad, ill tempered and haughty...like Michael Angelo. Of course, some women are also, but as you said you take a different approach in your love for sculpture and art. I don't know that as a woman that I could be so focused and so converted to one task, as they appear to be. The cost is too high for me. Michael de Angelo was competitive and insanely jealous, as were many of the others. He meant to be called the best. There are 12 videos, about 10 min each, on YouTube on Michael de Angelo. They are worth your time to watch, just search for his name. There are 18 on Leonardo da Vinci put out by the BBC, also worth the 3 hours it takes to watch them. Neither married or had children. Their art and science were their lives. I don't think I have ever wanted that. Perhaps that's the difference after all. What are you willing to sacrifice to make the kind of committment to ceate a masterpiece? Michael de Angelo describes himself as a sculpter not a painter but he took 4 years to paint the Cistine Chappel. Do I want it that bad? Are there women artists out there who have made that kind of committment and have that strong of a desire, and are not recognized? Even if you wait until your children are gone, will you then not face some age discrimination? The, you've started your career too late, most artists start and pursue it as child prodigies sometimes as early as 3 or 4 years old is a real stumbling block. Would an older woman be taken seriously? Don't quote Grandma Moses on me....her success is unique and she was not a Leonardo da Vinci.

Dr.Challa, I recentelly read a article that says maybe the reason women fall behind in art is because of the xx chromosone and that men are more agressive in nature as going back to the cave man when he had to devise ways to capture food and provide for his mate for survival of the human specieces. Therefore he had to create ways to capture ,food ,build ,invent tools and now that we have evolved as the human species ,we are changing and now women are just starting to be able to crate as that the demands upon them as the nest keepers are changing. even our foods are enriched with hormones and chemicals that are changing our chromonozones and our way of thinkinging. Some good some not so good.As in the case of wars where women learned to operate machines and take over the mans jobs to provide ,because the men were at war. Some creativitivity could have to do with culture some with our nature.Sure some women are very sucessfull .I love the works of Gergia O KEEF and many others. We vibrate our own condition and we as a specieces are only limited by our imiginations. So Women dream on and picture your selfs where you want to be .And if you dream work and strive to suceed you wil get there.Enstine was asked ,why do you suceed at your work ..he replield."most men dream and work on many things at one time ,I only focus on one thing> hope ya like my comment .Joe Ceraso
I do not know why there is a nude pic of a woman at the end. This was created by someone in response to the one about women. Perhaps it is her way of signing the piece. At the end of the video is a playlist of other videos. The one named "Self Portraits" is more like the Women In Art Video. It has the morphing faces and classical music.
What do you think of this statement made by a successful Children's songwriter..."Women can do it all. They just can't do it all at once." What would it take for the art community and the women artists to believe that?
