Q: Do 'chakras' described in a spiritual sense have any scientific basis?

Krishna: Chakras are a spiritual concept, primarily originating in ancient Indian traditions, describing energy centers in the body. While not scientifically proven, some practices like yoga and meditation, often used in conjunction with chakra work, have documented some health benefits.

Safe chakra-based therapies can complement medical care, offering a sense of well-being, says Medical health news.  (1)

If you look at the above picture, each one has some meaning with regard to human existence and behaviour. Ancient primitive knowledge connected each one to some area of the nervous system of the central spine and also the endocrine system.

When the root chakra, which is supposed to be at the base of a person's spine, is balanced, it is thought to create feelings of security, positivity, energy, independence, and strength.

The next level sacral chakra is considered to be responsible for sexuality, creativity, intuitiveness, self-worth, compassion, and adaptability.

The solar plexus chakra is considered to be the center of self-esteem and emotions like ego, anger, and aggression. It is thought to present itself on a physical level through digestive problems, liver problems, or diabetes. On an emotional level, if the solar plexus chakra is imbalanced, it is believed to cause feelings of depression and low self-esteem. When it’s balanced, it would become a source of energy, productivity, and confidence.

The heart chakra is considered a link to compassion, trust, passion, and love for self and others. When it is out of balance, it is believed to cause anger, lack of trust, anxiety, jealousy, fear, and moodiness. An overactive heart chakra is thought to lead to high blood pressure, heart palpitations, and heart problems.

The throat chakra is thought to control the neck, mouth, tongue, and other parts of the throat area. The throat chakra is tied to self-expression, communication, and confidence. Balancing throat chakra is believed to regulate the flow of hormones and help inner thoughts to be spoken in a positive manner

The third eye or Ajna chakra is set between the eyebrows. The third eye chakra is believed to control your intellect, intuition, wisdom, and spiritual power.

According to this belief system, an open and balanced third eye chakra allows you to notice the connections in this world and beyond.

An underactive third eye chakra is thought to manifest as a headache, a migraine, or blurry vision. When balanced, the third eye is believed to free you from earthly attachments.

The crown chakra, is at the top of the head, the highest of the seven main chakras. This is considered the most spiritual of the central chakras.

Opening the crown chakra is believed to connect a person to their higher self since it’s the place of spirituality, enlightenment, and energetic thoughts. It is tied to inner wisdom and the cosmos. When unbalanced, the crown chakra is thought to influence depression, disconnection from the outside world, frustration, and destructive emotions.

Now if you can control all these emotions without any external influence? Without any true spiritual connection? Because I could do this! Just by using critical and scientific thinking. How?

Those who believe in them say Chakra unblocking can be achieved through various methods, such as meditation, energy healing, yoga, and other chakra exercises. These practices can help release blocked energy and restore balance.

Yes, practices like yoga and meditation, often used in conjunction with chakra work, have been shown to have various benefits, including stress reduction and improved mood. Stress reduction, and control of mind can  have a positive effect on negative impacts of  stress and uncontrolled mind activities on the body.

Our ancestors connected this stress to 'blocking of energy' and reduction of it to 'release of energy' through yoga and meditation.

Apart from this connecting the chakras to different colours, astrological signs, crystals and minerals, tarot cards don't have any scientific significance.

No scientific evidence supports the existence of chakras in the spiritual sense. However, some scientists think that they correspond to physical body parts, particularly in the nervous system.

The nervous system consists of a person’s brain and spinal column, which contain nerves. These nerves branch off from the spine in bundles (plexuses) and connect to other areas of the body.

The primary chakras, which are located down the spine, may correspond to the central nervous system. Their connection to specific aspects of health may relate to different nerve plexuses.

For example, a 2017 cadaver study identified that the root chakra might be related to the inferior hypogastric plexus, which sends signals to the reproductive organs and rectum, two of the functions this chakra is meant to influence.

This may explain how the chakra system developed in the way it did, mirroring what scientists now know about the human body.

However, not everyone agrees with this interpretation and  there is a need to conduct more unbiased scientific research to establish facts.

Chakra-based therapies may be popular for several reasons. For example, they may support relaxation and promote a sense of well-being.

Meditation is often a part of 'chakra unblocking'. Many studies have shown it has mental and physical health benefits. Experts claim that these benefits include:

  • reducing stress
  • easing anxiety and depression
  • lowering blood pressure

Many therapies that target chakras can be relaxing. For example, yoga involves a combination of movement and mindful breathing, which may help calm the nervous system.

Activating the relaxation response generally benefits health, particularly for people who are often stressed. A sense of spiritual well-being may also impact mental or physical health.

It is also possible that chakra-based therapies improve well-being via the placebo effect. This is when a person believes that a treatment will help, resulting in a positive outcome.

This does not mean the benefits are fake — placebos can create genuine reductions in symptoms.

One thing must be kept in mind: You can practice these things as additional supplementary therapies to the main health care systems, but they are not a substitute for medical treatment.
