leading scholar of the histories of legacies of cell science and
technologies, and artists Jack Butler, Heidi McKenzie, Nadine Valcin and
Jennifer Willet.

followed by the documentary Black, Bold and Beautiful (1999) which picked up
an honourable mention at the prestigious ‘Columbus International Film and
Video Festival’. She is presently in the process of writing her first
feature film dealing with a former child soldier seeking refugee status in
Canada.
Jennifer Willet is an internationally successful artist in the emerging field of bioart. From 2000-2007 Willet and Shawn Bailey
collaborated on a project called BIOTEKNICA. She taught in the Studio Arts
Department at Concordia University from 2000-2007, and completed her PhD in
the Interdisciplinary Humanities Program at the same institution. In 2009
she opened a bioart research and teaching lab called INCUBATOR: Hybrid
Laboratory at the Intersection of Art, Science, and Ecology at the
University of Windsor.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS SYBHEL Project
Calling all writers, film makers, animators and artists - do you have a story to tell about the impact synthetic biology may have on future people? Throughout history, people have used their imaginations to create stories. While stories often entertain, they are also used to make sense of human experience and gain insight into philosophical questions. The possible health advances from the emerging science of synthetic biology may have a significant impact on both our lives and the lives of future people. The SYBHEL Project is instigating a short fiction competition in order to imaginatively consider these issues. UPCOMING DASER: 22 MARCH 2012, WASHINGTON DC Join us for the next DC Art Science Evening Rendezvous DASER), 22
March 2012, at Keck Center, Washington DC. This month, the discussion
focuses on the intersection of visual culture and evolution. Feature
presentations by professor Gerald Borgia, associate professor
Nathaniel Comfort, artist/educator Ellen Levy, and professor David
Rothenberg. Find out more
In July 2011 a group of artists, scientists and students worked with Dr. Jennifer Willet to build a portable bioart laboratory in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Participants completed a variety of art/science projects within the outdoor lab and presentedtheir projects to the public at an open house event.
BioARTCAMP worked to provide an alternative vision of biotechnology through the intersection of art and science.
It takes an artist like Björk to turn the complex process of DNA replication and transcription into something as simple and beautiful as a pop song. For the video of her song "Hollow," from last year's app-based album Biophilia, Björk has collaborated with biomedical animator Drew Berry to create a partly-scientific representation of the haunting song.
Explore innerspace in the video for Bjork's "Hollow"

"Hollow's" instrumentation is sparse — a rhythmic organ-like pulse and Björk's echoing voice. The blending of the electronic manipulation of the vocals, which makes it sound like there's a whole tribe of Björks singing in unison, and the thudding electronic notes give the song a feel that is primal yet futuristic. The lyrics add to the sense of looking back hundreds of generations: Bjork yearns to "belong" to the "generations of mothers" that pulse through her body, to be part of the necklace of "jewels after jewels."
Art meets science as several biological specimens of frogs, fish and other microorganisms have been turned into a visual assortment of photographs now on exhibit at St. Lawrence University's Brish Art Gallery. St. Lawrence faculty members, biologist Alex Screiber and bio-archaeologist Mindy Pitre used microscopy to photograph organisms stained with dyes to capture a visual display of metamorphosis.
Other works include photographs of tadpoles and frogs as well as microscopic images of other biological specimens.
Gallery officials say the artists selected the images on exhibit for their aesthetic appeal and scientific value.

Dr. Krishna Kumari Challa
In July 2011 a group of artists, scientists and students worked with Dr. Jennifer Willet to build a portable bioart laboratory in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Participants completed a variety of art/science projects within the outdoor lab and presentedtheir projects to
the public at an open house event.
BioARTCAMP worked to provide an alternative vision of
biotechnology through the intersection of art and science.

Art Meets Science At New SLU Exhibit
