Art review: 'Nurturing Nature' at the Freedman: art and science Reading Eagle
A fair balance of art and science, the pieces are more esoteric than straightforward biology, with everything on display engaged by the theme of nature and ecology. The topic of honoring nature with art has been constant throughout history and remains ...
From anatomical studies and landscape painting to Surrealism’s bio-morphs, the biological realm historically provided a significant resource for numerous artists. More recently, Bio Art refers to the intersecting domains of the biological sciences and their incorporation into the plastic arts.
This interdisciplinary residency will take place in the new Fine Arts Nature and Technology Laboratory located in the heart of New York City’s Chelsea gallery district. Each student will be assigned an individual work station, and participants will have access to all of the facilities. The Lab houses microscopes for photo and video imaging; skeleton, specimen and slide collections; an herbarium , aquarium and library. Demonstrations will include microscopy, plant tissue engineering, molecular cuisine and the production of micro eco-systems; students may work in any medium including the performing arts.
The Residency will be led by artist Suzanne Anker, Chair of the BFA Fine Arts Department at SVA, and Brandon Ballengée, bio- artist. In addition, visiting speakers will include artists, scientists, and museum professionals.
In the project, Sameer, a physicist at Caltech, is using a scanning electron microscope to take pictures of artwork he has carved into silicon using a Focused Ion Beam.
The beam of gallium ions is used to carve pictures into a silicon chip (like the C&C machine) or I can fill the chamber with certain types of gas and use the gallium beam to deposit tungsten or glass or platinum, and build a structure from the bottom up (like the MakerBot),

As if looking through a microscope, the documentary TISSUE peers into SymbioticA in much the same way its subjects investigate their own work. We meet international artists-in-residence, there to develop their own Bioart under the guidance of Zurr and scientific mentors. We brush against dozens of eerie semi-living artworks and engage in the conversation at the core of all SymbioticA art. In these rapidly changing times, how do we engage with other living entities?
Humorous and playful one moment, provocative and challenging the next, TISSUE explores the world of SymbioticA and the uncomfortable space between the living and non-living.

SymbioticA Lecture series: 1.d Semipermeable lecture series
SymbioticA and the Institute of Advanced Studies at UWA present the Semipermeable public lecture series. Just like a semipermeable membrane, SymbioticA offers exchange between art and the life sciences. SymbioticA is developing a new research project entitled Semipermeable, which will be facilitated through a multiplicity of artistic and scientific approaches. This quarantine will allow for controlled hybridisation and will act as a membrane for cultural production.

Orkan Telhan
In this talk, I reflect on the changes that are fundamentally transforming our perception of design and nature today. I discuss a series of work in relation to recent advances in biological sciences and engineering. From living to semi-living, to the non-living, and, synthetically death, I will present new frontiers of design where new ways of composing, assembling, regulating, programming and tinkering life can be seen beyond cheap medicine, better-yielding crops, sustainable building materials or renewable energy, and offer a different logic of life.
Biography: Orkan Telhan is an interdisciplinary artist, designer and researcher whose investigations focus on the design of interrogative objects, interfaces, and media, engaging with critical issues in social, cultural, and environmental responsibility. Telhan is Assistant Professor of Fine Arts - Emerging Design Practices at University of Pennsylvania, School of Design.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS SYBHEL Project
Calling all writers, film makers, animators and artists - do you have a story to tell about the impact synthetic biology may have on future people? Throughout history, people have used their imaginations to create stories. While stories often entertain, they are also used to make sense of human experience and gain insight into philosophical questions. The possible health advances from the emerging science of synthetic biology may have a significant impact on both our lives and the lives of future people. The SYBHEL Project is instigating a short fiction competition in order to imaginatively consider these issues. We are interested in stories told using a range of different media including writing, film, animation, graphic novels, spoken word or music. http://sybhel.org/?p=761
Due: 16 April 2012
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS M/C Journal of Media and Culture
This issue of M/C Journal calls for interdisciplinary and accessible discussions on the topic of 'ecology' from a natural sciences or humanities frame. Papers could engage with the emerging inter-disciplines of the 'ecological humanities', 'ecocinema' or 'ecomedia'. Alternatively, papers may discuss Neil Postman's notion of 'media ecology'. Adopting a scientific framework, this term denotes the study of media as dynamic environments whereby, "new communications technologies may not wipe out earlier ones" as John Naugton argues, but alter the ecosystem so the old ones that do survive are those that are able to adapt. As a result, changes in the communications environment bring about cultural change. http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal

KAREN INGHAM: WONDER CHAMBER Ffotogallery, Penarth, UK
9 March - 14 April 2012
The Wunderkammer, or Wonder Chamber, is related to and at times synonymous with the Kunstkammer (art chamber) and Cabinet of Curiosity. Wonder Chamber encapsulates the interdisciplinary nature of Ingham’s practice which embraces natural history, medical science, art history, museology, theatrical spectacle and lens-based media (the notion of the chamber, or camera, to quote the Latin origins, being inscribed in photography through the camera obscura, or ‘darkened room’). In particular, Ingham is concerned with notions of layering and concealing and revealing dichotomous states through optical science and illusion. Wonder Chamber and its accompanying publication, acts as an imaginary museum bringing together many of the key works Ingham has been developing over the past few years. http://www.ffotogallery.org/karen-ingham-wonder-chamber

A harmonic sense of balance and motion rests at the heart of all the works of Puerto Rican artist Julio Lugo Rivas, as he seeks to express the stability between disease and wellness. Capturing the microscopic universe of cells and their environment in acrylic and mixed media on canvas, Lugo paints an ethereal and energetic vision, creating an organic abstraction in his mix of atmospheric brushstrokes, staccato splatters, and delicate line work. Lugo builds a deep and murky dreamworld of darkness and illumination as he investigates interactions between clouds, geometric shapes, and cellular forms, graphically exploring scientific theories of microcosms and the great expanse of the cosmos.

Zoe Leonard, London
The photography in the New York-based artist Zoe Leonard's latest show is anything but snappy snap. Firstly, she's turning a gallery into a camera obscura, the age-old device where light is filtered through a hole, projecting a topsy-turvy mirror image of the world outside on to walls and floor. Then there are her latest photos of the sun, which turn light into a subject in its own right. Leonard has blown up what look like pale halos against grey to reveal the glare on the camera lens and the texture of film. Rounding off the triple whammy of alternative photography is her acclaimed 2008 series You See I Am Here After All, thousands of uncannily similar vintage postcards of Niagara Falls sent by holidaymakers across the decades. Rather than photos that imitate life, Leonard explores photography as a thing in the world.

SymbioticA Lecture series:
1.d Semipermeable lecture series
SymbioticA and the Institute of Advanced Studies at UWA present the Semipermeable public lecture series. Just like a semipermeable membrane, SymbioticA offers exchange between art and the life sciences. SymbioticA is developing a new research project entitled Semipermeable, which will be facilitated through a multiplicity of artistic and scientific approaches. This quarantine will allow for controlled hybridisation and will act as a membrane for cultural production.

Of Mice and Men
Orkan Telhan

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
SYBHEL Project

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
M/C Journal of Media and Culture

KAREN INGHAM: WONDER CHAMBER
Ffotogallery, Penarth, UK

LABoral
Gijûn, Spain
Estaciûn experimental [Experimental Station] presents the work of those artists whose work is inspired by an irrepressible impulse that connects them to the purest part of scientific research. Steering away from pre-established guidelines in contemporary art, these creators share a certain fascination in their work for extra-artistic themes - not only for what happens in the field of reality but also in the beyond.

http://www.openpr.com/news/216957/Julio-Lugo-Rivas-Organic-Visions-...
