In the framework of the European project StudioLab, Leonardo/Olats, in collaboration with IMéRA, is organizing a two day workshop on the theme "Water is in the Air".
Based on singular artistic and scientific projects involving water as case studies, in hard sciences as well as humanities, this workshop seeks to explore trans-disciplinary crossings. We will be seeking to deepen our understanding of how the large variety of art-science collaborations function today; examining the roadblocks to such collaborations and the new opportunities they provide. We also seek to develop ideas for innovative ways to work and engage with different kind of audiences and publics.
Among the axis and issues on water that have been selected: - clouds: triggering artificial rain, to whom belongs the water in the clouds, poetics of clouds, man made clouds;
- waves: scientific breakthroughs on the understanding of waves formation and structure confronted to the image of water and waves in art;
- aerosols and raindrops: the science of water in the air;
- 4th state of water.

On June 14, 2012, NEA (US) Senior Advisor for Program Innovation Bill O'Brien hosted a webinar on NEA funding opportunities available to support art-science projects across all disciplines. A ten-minute presentation was followed by a question & answer session.
Artists and artist-led teams are invited to submit proposals for iconic data-generated public artworks that engage with environmental and behavioural issues in evocative, unexpected and playful ways.
ANAT and Carbon Arts are pleased to announce the Call for Proposals for three high‐profile artworks to be developed for
Lend Lease sites in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
Winning artists / artist-led teams for each of the sites will come together in Sydney from 29 October – 2 November to participate in an Australia Council supported Art Lab led by world-leaders in data-driven arts practice. The proposed timeline for the production of the artworks is late 2012 – mid 2013.
The blending of science and art can be complicated for some people -- merging both sides of your brain doesn't always make sense. But it's perfectly reasonable for local artist ANN AMICA ALTSTATT, who specializes in lithography. She fell in love with the medium in college. At the same time as her first lithography class, she was also taking Vertebrate Paleontology. "I had some really wild dreams that quarter where the two disciplines combined in unexpected and inexplicable ways," she says."Something clicked and I feel as though I have been trying to reconcile and honor this relationship between my art brain and my science brain ever since."
Fortunately, we get a chance to see the merging of the two sides in a show called "Earth Science Art" which is hanging at the R. Blitzer Gallery in Santa Cruz until July 7. According to the project's website, this show "pairs artists from California's Central Coast and San Francisco Bay Area with scientists from the Santa Cruz-based U.S. Geological Survey's Pacific Marine and Coastal Science Center." Altstatt's work in this show is a four-panel mixed media piece inspired by the marine structural geology of the Central Coast.
Also look for her work to be featured at the Museum of Art & History's Art Market Saturday series on July 28 in Abbott Square.

Dark field microscopy is the art of using indirect light to illuminate specimens under your microscope lens; because the light is indirect, it doesn’t shine into the microscope, and the specimen appears to be floating brilliantly against a night-black background.
I decided to look up dark field microscopy after seeing this photograph of fruit fly sperm that looks like a study from Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night. The technique seems to be the same, on a small scale, as the way the moon is lit by the sun.
Siddharth Ramakrishnan, aNeuroscientist Finds a Campus That Embraces the Intersection of Science and Art. He met Victoria Vesna, a multimedia artist who directs the UCLA Art|Sci Center, at a party and they decided to collaborate.
Collaborations on art exhibitions founded in scientific topics like Hox genes and olfactory umwelts. Through art, he hopes we are breaking the accessibility barrier to science. In the small Art|Sci community, he talked to researchers who have contemplated working as artists but realized it's more amenable to make a living working as scientists. And a lot of artists he had met have thought about going into the sciences at one point. There seems to be a penchant for both inside a lot of people.
He wondered how to balance being a scientist while whetting his creativity within Art|Science and have deferred to Professor Gimzewski's advice that it's tough, but you just need to keep creating and something will come out of it. Some researchers do laugh at you, but more and more young scientists are excited about collaborating with artists.
For the last three years he has been at Columbia University, creating hybrid neural-electronic devices, biosensors, and biobatteries. Last fall he applied for the position at the University of Puget Sound. When he went there for interviews, he didn't have to hide anything. Every single faculty member he met made a point of asking him, "So tell me about your art work. How can I be involved?" It's a place where the liberal arts and sciences truly seem to be together.
The neuroscience program at Puget Sound developed a few years ago, when some faculty from biology, occupational therapy, and psychology came together and volunteered to develop some courses in neuroscience. What they created has blossomed, and they wanted a more dedicated position to take it further.
Apart from the core neuroscience curricula, he also hopes to develop interdisciplinary classes in art and science after his appointment begins, in January,2013.

This fellowship is designed around an Innovation Challenge; our charge to each candidate is to artistically consider a complex issue concerning cultural policy in an information society. The Optical Sciences group studies the interaction of light and matter at the nanoscale. They do this by exploring ways to shape light and its environment. It's what they call active and passive control. Their current focus is on the interaction of light with biomolecules and nanostructures. In the race to uncover the structure of DNA, the molecule of life, researchers bickered over how its strands fit together in three-dimensional space. James Watson and Francis Crick won this race.
Several years later now, Ottawa-based DNA11 (Ahmed and his business partner Adrian Salamunovic formed it) is moving molecules out of the lab and into the home, creating personalized works of DNA art and uncovering a modern version of DNA’s functional beauty, which Watson, Crick and Wilkins unlocked decades ago. They are using it as a way to fuse their passions of genomics and art and expose more people to genomics.
They ask you to provide your DNA.DNA11 sends you a swab kit that you use to transfer cheek cells to a collection card, which you then send back to the company. DNA11 begins processing the sample with 8 different makers, which insures unique canvas art for each customer. After amplifying the unique DNA bands (so there’s enough DNA to visualize), separating them according to size using an electric field (so the molecules don’t lump together), and staining them with UV dye (to highlight the DNA that’s there), the company takes a digital image and prints the DNA profile on a canvas.

The use of biologically inspired techniques for the development of artistic systems is a recent, exciting and significant area of research. There is a growing interest in the application of these techniques in fields such as: visual art and music generation, analysis, and interpretation; sound synthesis; architecture; video; poetry; design; and other creative tasks. The main goal of evomusart 2013 is to bring together researchers who are using biologically inspired computer techniques for artistic tasks, providing the opportunity to promote, present and discuss ongoing work in the area.

A group of scientists from the UK are turning a lot of machines loose on some random machine generated tonal loops. It is a little like American Idol for machines. The machines randomly generate these rhythmic tonal patterns and you the public, get to vote on what loop you like the best. Each winning loop gets another generation and is combined with other winning loops to begin the process of melodic and harmonic composition. It is kind of like Bach meets African thumb harp meets pac-man. If you would like to be a part of the creative process of this science experiment just go to their website.
Dr. Robert Lang enjoyed math and science, which inspired him to pursue an education in these fields. Eventually he received his Ph.D. in applied physics from Caltech. He soon realized how both his art and scientific studies coincided.
“Some of the things he learned along the way of a scientific career turned out to be really beneficial for the artistic development,” he says, “In particular, in science, math, and engineering people learn to try to describe a phenomenon in a mathematical way, and if we succeed in developing that description, then we can use the techniques of math to learn a lot more".
Once Lang recognized the overlap between his hobby and educational theories, he utilized the blend between art and science to develop his artistic abilities even further.
“It seemed to me that we could use the same approaches in my art, because origami seemed to be governed by mathematical principles,” he says, “If I could learn what those principles were, then I could use the tool kit that I developed in my engineering and science education to accomplish my artistic goals.”
His understanding of how art and science are combined has bolted him into a career of more than just folding paper into the art of Origami.
Lang leads origami workshops, attends international origami conventions, is an acclaimed author, offers science and engineering lectures and also uses his research for technological solutions.

Recent discoveries in physics have changed our lives forever. From iPhones and the internet to medical imaging and genetic engineering, modern technology has largely been developed through advances in physics, yet few people understand it. The ‘Colliding Ideas’ symposium will address the social and creative parameters of the physical sciences, taking inspiration from the 36th International Conference on High Energy Physics, also in Melbourne, where they may be making an announcement about a future-changing discovery. ‘Colliding Ideas’ will explore the dimensions of physics and ask what is going on in there, how it relates to our social world, and how it affects us culturally and physically. And, in such contexts, how do the perspectives of physicists relate to and differ from those of artists and visual communicators who use physics-based technologies. The symposium will feature key speakers from CERN and the Australian Network for Arts & Technology, alongside contemporary media and fine arts practitioners and theorists. Lend Lease sites in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

The blending of science and art can be complicated for some people -- merging both sides of your brain doesn't always make sense. But it's perfectly reasonable for local artist ANN AMICA ALTSTATT, who specializes in lithography. She fell in love with the medium in college. At the same time as her first lithography class, she was also taking Vertebrate Paleontology. "I had some really wild dreams that quarter where the two disciplines combined in unexpected and inexplicable ways," she says."Something clicked and I feel as though I have been trying to reconcile and honor this relationship between my art brain and my science brain ever since."
Fortunately, we get a chance to see the merging of the two sides in a show called "Earth Science Art" which is hanging at the R. Blitzer Gallery in Santa Cruz until July 7. According to the project's website, this show "pairs artists from California's Central Coast and San Francisco Bay Area with scientists from the Santa Cruz-based U.S. Geological Survey's Pacific Marine and Coastal Science Center." Altstatt's work in this show is a four-panel mixed media piece inspired by the marine structural geology of the Central Coast.
Also look for her work to be featured at the Museum of Art & History's Art Market Saturday series on July 28 in Abbott Square.

Dark field microscopy is the art of using indirect light to illuminate specimens under your microscope lens; because the light is indirect, it doesn’t shine into the microscope, and the specimen appears to be floating brilliantly against a night-black background.

I decided to look up dark field microscopy after seeing this photograph of fruit fly sperm that looks like a study from Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night. The technique seems to be the same, on a small scale, as the way the moon is lit by the sun.

Siddharth Ramakrishnan, aNeuroscientist Finds a Campus That Embraces the Intersection of Science and Art. He met Victoria Vesna, a multimedia artist who directs the UCLA Art|Sci Center, at a party and they decided to collaborate.
Collaborations on art exhibitions founded in scientific topics like Hox genes and olfactory umwelts. Through art, he hopes we are breaking the accessibility barrier to science. In the small Art|Sci community, he talked to researchers who have contemplated working as artists but realized it's more amenable to make a living working as scientists. And a lot of artists he had met have thought about going into the sciences at one point. There seems to be a penchant for both inside a lot of people.
He wondered how to balance being a scientist while whetting his creativity within Art|Science and have deferred to Professor Gimzewski's advice that it's tough, but you just need to keep creating and something will come out of it. Some researchers do laugh at you, but more and more young scientists are excited about collaborating with artists.
For the last three years he has been at Columbia University, creating hybrid neural-electronic devices, biosensors, and biobatteries. Last fall he applied for the position at the University of Puget Sound. When he went there for interviews, he didn't have to hide anything. Every single faculty member he met made a point of asking him, "So tell me about your art work. How can I be involved?" It's a place where the liberal arts and sciences truly seem to be together.
The neuroscience program at Puget Sound developed a few years ago, when some faculty from biology, occupational therapy, and psychology came together and volunteered to develop some courses in neuroscience. What they created has blossomed, and they wanted a more dedicated position to take it further.
Apart from the core neuroscience curricula, he also hopes to develop interdisciplinary classes in art and science after his appointment begins, in January,2013.

Through the lens of art and technology, it will inform strategies for research, development, and creativity by provoking challenges that address the complex world in which we live. The ZERO1 Garage is envisioned as a platform for creative risk-takers from the arts and culture, business, science and academic sectors to interact, engage, and spur innovative change.
ZERO1 Fellowship with sponsorship from Google Public Policy
The centerpiece of the ZERO1 Garage is an interdisciplinary peer network/brain trust composed of innovation experts engaged in collaborative research and experimentation. For this, we are currently seeking artist candidates to apply for a ZERO1 Fellowships in collaboration with Google Public Policy. This fellowship is designed around an Innovation Challenge; our charge to each candidate is to artistically consider a complex issue concerning cultural policy in an information society. The candidate will develop an original artwork that serves to interpret or illuminate the current state of difficulty associated with molding cultural policy so that it conforms to the reality of a society that is more connected with and dependent on technology than ever before. The project duration is six months, with a fellowship award of $10,000.

It's what they call active and passive control. Their current focus is on the interaction of light with biomolecules and nanostructures. In the race to uncover the structure of DNA, the molecule of life, researchers bickered over how its strands fit together in three-dimensional space. James Watson and Francis Crick won this race.
Several years later now, Ottawa-based DNA11 (Ahmed and his business partner Adrian Salamunovic formed it) is moving molecules out of the lab and into the home, creating personalized works of DNA art and uncovering a modern version of DNA’s functional beauty, which Watson, Crick and Wilkins unlocked decades ago. They are using it as a way to fuse their passions of genomics and art and expose more people to genomics. They ask you to provide your DNA.DNA11 sends you a swab kit that you use to transfer cheek cells to a collection card, which you then send back to the company. DNA11 begins processing the sample with 8 different makers, which insures unique canvas art for each customer. After amplifying the unique DNA bands (so there’s enough DNA to visualize), separating them according to size using an electric field (so the molecules don’t lump together), and staining them with UV dye (to highlight the DNA that’s there), the company takes a digital image and prints the DNA profile on a canvas. Oron Catts, Director of SymbioticA, will present a lecture on biological portraits at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, during which attendees will find petri dishes into which a personal flora of bacteria will be collected from each interested participant and cultured for a week in the laboratory. Viewing of this biological self-portrait will be conducted one week later at SymbioticA’s lab room 222 on Thursday 12 July between 2- 3 pm. Projektet draws on the notion of the immune system as a bio-artistic blueprint of personal and cultural changes In a joint residency with SymbioticA, Amanda Newall and Ola Johansson conduct lab-based research along with applied performance work in local communities in the metropolitan Perth area. The exhibition will involve a variety of media, such as lab results, costume, physical objects, video and performative actions. Experiments with our most outreaching and personal site of identity, the corporeal immune system, will provoke graphic, material, conceptual and live reactions that applies to site-specific circumstances where social actors will ultimately come up against the limits of their own identities/communities. Bio-artistic game concepts will incite personal and collective (inter)actions toward future communal relations beyond biological determinism and cultural utopias.

A group of scientists from the UK are turning a lot of machines loose on some random machine generated tonal loops. It is a little like American Idol for machines. The machines randomly generate these rhythmic tonal patterns and you the public, get to vote on what loop you like the best. Each winning loop gets another generation and is combined with other winning loops to begin the process of melodic and harmonic composition. Dr. Robert Lang enjoyed math and science, which inspired him to pursue an education in these fields. Eventually he received his Ph.D. in applied physics from Caltech. He soon realized how both his art and scientific studies coincided.
“Some of the things he learned along the way of a scientific career turned out to be really beneficial for the artistic development,” he says, “In particular, in science, math, and engineering people learn to try to describe a phenomenon in a mathematical way, and if we succeed in developing that description, then we can use the techniques of math to learn a lot more".
Once Lang recognized the overlap between his hobby and educational theories, he utilized the blend between art and science to develop his artistic abilities even further.
“It seemed to me that we could use the same approaches in my art, because origami seemed to be governed by mathematical principles,” he says, “If I could learn what those principles were, then I could use the tool kit that I developed in my engineering and science education to accomplish my artistic goals.”
His understanding of how art and science are combined has bolted him into a career of more than just folding paper into the art of Origami.
Lang leads origami workshops, attends international origami conventions, is an acclaimed author, offers science and engineering lectures and also uses his research for technological solutions.

Recent discoveries in physics have changed our lives forever. From iPhones and the internet to medical imaging and genetic engineering, modern technology has largely been developed through advances in physics, yet few people understand it. The ‘Colliding Ideas’ symposium will address the social and creative parameters of the physical sciences, taking inspiration from the 36th International Conference on High Energy Physics, also in Melbourne, where they may be making an announcement about a future-changing discovery. ‘Colliding Ideas’ will explore the dimensions of physics and ask what is going on in there, how it relates to our social world, and how it affects us culturally and physically. And, in such contexts, how do the perspectives of physicists relate to and differ from those of artists and visual communicators who use physics-based technologies. The Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award highlights and explores the exciting and novel possibilities between design, artistic practice and life sciences. Conceived by the Netherlands Genomics Initiative, the Centre for Society and Genomics, and Waag Society, the Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award aims to stimulate emerging designers and artists to delve into the world of bio-art, and produce new work in close collaboration with the Netherlands most prestigious Genomics Centres, for example in the fields of sustainability, food, health, bio-informatics, agriculture, and safety. Successful projects will be exhibited at Naturalis in Leiden, from mid June 2013 until the end of the year.
