Long-awaited NW Iowa exhibit captures the art and science genius of original Renaissance Man Monday, July 9, 2012
The Sioux City Art Center will present "Leonardo da Vinci: Man Inventor Genius & Man Artist Genius" as its newest Blockbuster exhibition from July 14--Oct. 14.
The dual exhibition contains 35 machines and models of inventions made from original Leonardo da Vinci drawings, 23 full-scale replications of his art masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa, together with a time room, four computer simulation wall projections, and a theater room featuring a film on the artist. Even some original music composed by da Vinci is featured.
The multi-talented original "Rennaissance Man" continues to fascinate the public nearly 500 years after his death. "da Vinci is both artist and engineer... he represents the combination of science and the humanities."
By presenting the paintings among the inventions, the exhibition seeks to capture how the man's mind flowed from meticulous observation to wild creativity to an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.
Get Creative. Take a little science, some math, turn it into a cool piece of art and you could win part of $2500 in cash prizes. Winning submissions may have their art placed on public display in the new Los Alamos Creative District.
ELIGIBILITY: This Contest is open to anyone age 18+ except where prohibited, licensed, restricted or taxed. See completecontest rulesfor details.

Architects, artists, scientists, hackers and engineers from across Europe came together in Dublin today to begin a unique collaborative workshop called Interactivos?‘12 in Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin.
The event is taking place in the midst of the opening of the Euroscience Open Forum in Dublin this evening.
Interactivos?'12 is part of a new Europe-wide initiative called Studiolab. It's a three-year project that is aiming to merge the artist's studio with the research lab.
During Interactivos, which will run until 15 July, Science Gallery said this evening that 30 participants from all over Europe will be collaborating to develop their ideas, ranging from planting guerilla gardens with 'seed bombs' to turning recycling bins into public art.
Jane Chadwick of Science Gallery is leading the Studiolab project. She said that Interactivos is about bringing together people from very different backgrounds to generate new ideas.
"We're also expecting some really useful outcomes from the taskforce, so it's great to be hosting the process here in Dublin," she said.
To give you a flavour of some of the ideas that people will be collaborating on, in terms of hacking, one idea being progressed is a project to hack our home electrical system, visualise energy usage and improve efficiency.
Another idea is a mobile app to crowdsource information on dangerous areas for cycling. Another project is a digital platform to explore our emotional connections to different parts of the city.
Studiolab itself is funded by the European Commission Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). It is a collaborative effort between experts from 13 European centres of scientific research, artistic excellence and experimental design across 12 countries.
The aim of the initiative is to propose solutions for environmental, technological and social issues across themes as varied as the future of water, the future of social interaction and synthetic biology.
While Science Gallery is leading the project, the other network members include Le Laboratoire from Paris, Design Interactions at The Royal College of Art, London; Ars Electronica at Linz; MediaLab Prado, Madrid; ISI Foundation, Turin; Optofonica, Amsterdam; Ecole de Recherche Graphique (ERG), Brussels; Leonardo, France; CIANT, Prague; RIX-C - The Center for New Media Culture, Riga; Medical Museion Copenhagen; and Bloomfield Science Museum in Jerusalem.
‘Art in Science’ is a monthly column by Prof. Michael Miller of the University of Tokyo Medical School. Each month, he will focus on a new painting and its role in science.
I answer in the affirmative because science requires not just theorizing and empirical testing but also choosing from alternative theories. The choice, usually based on Occam’s Razor, is art. This is not new. Supposedly, it harks back to Nietzsche and was well elucidated by Popper with the concept of “falsifiability” as being inherent in science. What this means is that you can’t falsify without having a priori a choice of which theories to attempt to falsify. That a priori choice is, obviously, neither predetermined nor itself “falsifiable,” if only because the universe of possible theories is an unlimited set (and such a set would by definition not be fully knowable).
Smash Art, a science and art collaborative workshop on how to transform electronics into repurposed toys, art, and robotics through tinkering, will take place Saturday from 1-3p.
m., and Countdown to Kindergarten will be held Thursday, July 19, 2012 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Creative Discovery Museum. For more information, visit www.cdmfun.org.
Pinks, oranges, and yellows dance together on a matted print where the colors of a sunset -- and science, and art -- come together in one unique creation. It’s scientific art -- or BioArtography.
And next week at Ann Arbor’s famous Art Fair, the images made by University of Michigan scientists will be for sale as decorative art that also shows the beautiful side of medical science.
Artist Danielle Gotell's 'Impulse' Turns Passersby's Heart-Rates Into Light Show
Vancouver-based artist Danielle Gotell is using heart-rate monitors as an artistic medium, creating an experimental artwork that translates passersby's heart-rates into an electronic light show.
Gotell is collaborating with Limbic Media in Victoria, Canada on the technology necessary to make our internal vital signs into a work of art. The performance invites people walking by to grab onto a hand-held heart-rate monitor that is hooked up to electric lights, flashing to the beat of their hearts. Through peepholes in the wall, participants can see the inner workings of their bodies, projected as a real-time electro masterpiece, a heart-rate rave.
The work combines four heartbeats into one video installation, combining strangers' intimate information to create one pulsing artwork. The resulting broadcast is kept private, only viewable by the participants. In an interview with the Times Colonist, Gotell commented: ""I wanted to represent something that's unconscious, something that's happening inside your body just regularly that you're not fully conscious of."
The installation "Impulse" will run from Friday, July 13 to August 1, from approximately 9 a.m. to midnight each day at G++ Interactive Media Gallery.

Is science art?
