I read this on an online art forum. I was asked to tell this to all digital artists. So I am posting it here. What do digital artists here think?
Attack On Digital Art
In an art-related Linkedin group, a war is raging between those who like digital art and some really die-hard machine-hating artistic traditionalists. One of the more extreme Luddites posted this priceless gem:
"'Digital art' is not 'ART' period!!! And I am sorry to say this, but digital artists are not true artists. They don't go through all the suffering, happiness, joy, and everything in between that the real artists go through when they are creating a work of art. Digital artists just play with the new toy called 'computer' and for this nobody needs any talent; the computer is doing their work for them."
I have never seen anything so inspiring for digital artists. I encourage everyone to spread this around as much as possible; the statement really deserves to go viral big-time. I believe that teachers especially should discuss this in great depth with their students and with each other.

This is like saying you are no longer an artist if you switch from Oil to Acrylic, or Eric Clapton isn't a musician because he switches from an acoustic to an electric guitar. Another example of this sort of blinkered attitude: a very well known and award winning photographer in the USA is often banned from exhibiting by some factions because he has switched to a digital camera and no longer uses a dark room. Art is in the idea not the medium used to present it. Digital is just another medium used to express artistic ideas, the traditionalists use paint to imitate light, we use light to imitate paint - and like it or not paintbrushes are no longer compulsory. We are not going to get away from technology, it is the way that we as a species progresses, and how art progresses will go with it or die out with the die-hards. Personally, all of my work is hand drawn, then painted long before I involve a computer - it still requires technique; composition, perspective, light and shade, colour. Take a look www.kingart.co.uk and tell me if my computer did it all by itself............
I got to say with my apologies for writing!
That whoever wrote this is a moron! and lacks of brains!.
An Digital Artist struggles as well as much as Van Gogh did, Or Chagall, many of them died as many of those great painter, as being unknown, plus many traditional artist today either they learn computer skills and adavance them learnings and become illustrators, then they create digital art as well!
A Digital Artist spend sometimes even more time than any oil based painter do, and you need to be on the computer to find satisfaction when the work you did got as good as you wanted even if you spent days on the making! that satisfaction is hard to describe!.
Today the most creative artist on the field actually use both expressions as some things cannot be definetely done on pixels not even with expensive softwares!
Wonder who was this moron who wrote that mindless message!
My apologies if this message is too hard!
I believe the one whose post is above doesn't understand a thing about digital art, or/and is not open minded person.
I am not a digital artist, but can appreciate it . I have seen beautiful art works which I consider ART. Of course there are many digital works which are not art. The computer is much more available to every one than pains and brushes, and even children are playing with the different drawing possibilities.
The post above is obviously very extreme and not wise.
People who create digital art have got to put alot of work into their creations... who ever wrote the above has no understand
Can you imagine what Da Vinci would have done with a computor ? O.K. I'm a classically trained realist painter and I've taken four years on a painting BUT even though I feel very envious when a digital sells their work before mine....it's a big world and I'll sell them one day !! Digital Artists have just as much a place in the world of art as any other medium.
Ignorance is our worst enemy.
Krishna,
If that discussion is still going on and you happen to have the time and have it, could you post a link to this discussion?
Best Regards,
Mark
Mark, I think the discussion is closed long back. It was posted some ten months back and now it is buried somewhere in the huge list of the discussions and I couldn't find it. Sorry.
