What do you look for on a network if you are invited to join it?

One of my friends, who is a network creator had an interesting experience a few days back. She asked one of her friends to join her network. Then her friend asked her to explain him in what way he would benefit if he joined her network. My friend explained all the things her network offers. But in the end he refused to join because the network cannot help him in marketing his work!
Yes, network creators have to face all these difficult situations!

I am a member of more than 500 networks - most of them are art related. In the beginning I joined all these art related networks I was invited to because I wanted to see what goes on in the art world. I came from a different field and wanted to learn how art world works. Now I join just to help my friends who are new network creators.
Some networks are really wonderful. They stimulate your brain. But sadly they are only a few.
It is a good learning experience & you can benefit by joining these networks. You can connect with people in your field from all over the world & discuss your problems, learn about their experiences & know their opinions & thoughts. Above all you can make good friends - I am glad to say I have more than 2000 artist friends now. And selling your art works by networking? I feel we shouldn't think much about it.
Yes, It is true different people look for different things on a network.
So, what do my friends here look for on a network?

Today art has take a new shape in every sphere, be it in any form. The net is one of the best ways to show what your creative aptitude can be projected as. I would say it is also one of the best places to learn too.I have learnt a few things as I am not so much good at computers.Art specially has drawn me to join many of the networking sites, and in doing so have made many freinds too.Friends are for sharing and what better way than being creative.
500? You know, ya'll women go so un-noticed, you have a wonderfully made gift of multi-tasking, that most men do not! I can't keep up with 4 networks, (well, I am doing okay) and you are in 500!
I joined simply to make friends and I especially enjoy this opportunity of having friends with different backgrounds, world-views, etc. It can only add to my understanding, I have to ask the big man for wisdom!
I am thankful for your great interest in these things too, it has opened my world up a bit, doc!
I am a member of all these networks!

Yes, Minnie. I myself am facing this problem. As I am in several fields, I joined several networks in those fields.
However, I found out a way to save time. I identified the good ones & visit them regularly. Other ones I just ignore.
These networks made me famous around the world without spending much on advertising & traveling. So there is positive side to networking.

I guess the greatest thing that worries me about joining networks is losing the time to work on my art. I'm not sure that's a good trade.
