I feel what comes naturally from the depth of the human mind & the bottom of the heart is the real art. It should not be fenced in & allowed to suffocate. The artist has the right to present it to the world in the way he wants-the way he visualizes it in the box above his shoulders-provided it doesn't harm the society & hurt anybody. This natural art with all its variations that all the human neuron evolution could gather has a charm of its own. Asking it to follow certain rules is like asking the human brain to evolve in only one direction-the direction of stagnation & stunted growth.

I think there are at least two sides of this interesting issue. I agree that artists should be free to express their art in any constructive manner. Breaking entirely with conventions usually means that it will be quite unfamiliar to its visitors and may not be understood until well after the artist's death. If that's the goal okay. To communicate with people through art requires at least some frame of reference for them in which to understand the art. Personally I like to at least acknowledge conventions and try to stretch peoples' imaginations at least a little.
I think that knowing what 'the rules' are is important to be able to work outside 'the rules'. I think first we must be boxed in before we can break free. so to speak.

Maybe thats the coder in me talking, having to know syntax is nessisary when creating scripts, but being able to work around imposed limitations shows a true creative vein. I see that same with traditional art, somthing could be creativly brilliant without being techniclly brilliant, and vice-a-versa. but being both technically brilliant and creativly brilliant has a duality that makes it almost devine in nature--prefect.

isnt this perfection all artists seek?
