Q: Is science a way of thinking or is it a body of knowledge? Why?

Krishna: Both! But tilting more towards the former and being a scientist is a state of mind.
Because you cannot acquire the right body of knowledge if your thinking is substandard.
Science is both a body of knowledge and a way of thinking, but it is primarily a way of thinking—a method of skeptical interrogation, evidence-based inquiry, and questioning of established dogma. While it builds a massive, evolving database of facts about the universe, its core strength lies in the process of discovery, testing, and refining ideas.

Why Science is Primarily a Way of Thinking:

Skeptical Interrogation: Science insists on verifying claims rather than accepting them on authority, utilizing a "fine balance between no-holds-barred openness to new ideas... and the most rigorous skeptical scrutiny".
Process Over Product: As a way of thinking, science is a tool for exploring the universe, allowing us to ask "why" and "how," which leads to the creation of knowledge.
Refinement and Revision: Unlike static knowledge, science embraces the idea that findings can be changed or replaced by new, better evidence.
Challenging Dogma: It encourages questioning conventional wisdom, sometimes requiring courage to challenge existing beliefs.
Adopting the new knowledge: We take the knowledge and experience we gained and use it to change the way we think.
Critical and scientific thinking: Science and its methods take us towards the right way of thinking overcoming all human fallacies.
Defining our state of mind: Science changes your complete world view and your try to see everything from the scientific perspective.

Producing scientific culture: By integrating scientific culture into our daily lives, we can improve our quality of life and contribute to the progress of society. Scientific culture encompasses not only knowledge of concepts, but also understanding of the role of science in the advancement of society and appreciation of its contributions.

Introduces moral obligation: Science is not limited to making discoveries but also involves sharing this knowledge with the world. Failure to do so would be a failure of one of the most important moral imperatives of science in the 21st century.

Science is ongoing: One of the most progressive ways of thinking is continuously moving forward without stagnating. That is what science adopted and follows constantly.

Why Science is Also a Body of Knowledge:

Organized Understanding: It produces a comprehensive and reliable, yet constantly evolving, repository of facts about the natural world.
Result of Inquiry: This body of knowledge—the theories, laws, and facts—is the direct output of applying the scientific method.

So , Science is the process of searching for the evidence based facts - thinking - that produces a description of the knowledge - body - of those facts.

“Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking, a way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility.” — Carl Sagan
