Krishna: Who decides the “better” part of it? You? Or the scientific community?

The Scientific Community decides using scientific methods. If the new theory doesn’t follow these proper procedures, nobody even considers it in the scientific world.

The process in the scientific method involves making conjectures (hypothetical explanations), deriving predictions from the hypotheses as logical consequences, and then carrying out experiments or empirical observations based on those predictions.

It involves careful observation, applying rigorous skepticism about what is observed, given that cognitive assumptions can distort how one interprets the observation. It involves formulating hypotheses, via induction, based on such observations; the testability of hypotheses, experimental and the measurement-based statistical testing of deductions drawn from the hypotheses; and refinement (or elimination) of the hypotheses based on the experimental findings. These are principles of the scientific method, as distinguished from a definitive series of steps applicable to all scientific enterprises (1).

Scientists are likely to accept a new or modified theory if it explains everything the old theory did and more. The process of theory change may take time and involve controversy, but eventually the scientific explanation that is more accurate will be accepted.

The principles and theories of science have been established through repeated experimentation and observation and have been refereed through peer review before general acceptance by the scientific community. Acceptance does not imply rigidity or constraint, or denote dogma.

People think what they proposed is correct based on their biases, illusions, fallacies, distortions and what not. To checkmate these human inadequacies, a scientific method is followed. If you don't follow it correctly, nobody will be interested in your theory, no matter how excellent you think it is. Period.

If a new theory failed to satisfactorily explain the results of the experiment, the new theory is useless.

Scientists don’t deal with trash. And you cannot fool scientists.
