Q: My mother had a heart attack recently. When we admitted her to a hospital
the doctors there were cool to her condition and didn't heed to our requests properly. Are medical professionals becoming heartless?
Krishna: Doctors and scientists are guided by their knowledge, not human emotions. Patients and their relatives panic, get agitated and want immediate remedies to their conditions. Well most of them. They are driven by feelings for their loved ones.
I agree some doctors are negligent, because I myself faced such situations with regard to my mother's health. But not all.
If a patient is brought to a hospital, the doctors first should know the exact condition of a patient before starting any treatment. Some tests will be done. They can't start immediate treatment unless the patient is in a very serious condition.
Once they get an idea, they start treatment. They also know it takes time for the patient to respond to the treatment. There is nothing they can do to speed the process. It is the human body. Science controls it. Only science should deal with things going awry. Not emotions. If you bother the doctors too much, they might do things that are not necessary.
Once I took my mother to a doctor. She was in severe pain and asked the doctor to alleviate it   as soon as possible. The doctor wrote a long list of medicines. When I saw the list I was agitated. I asked him why he wrote so many 'not so necessary' drugs.  His reply made me more annoyed. He said, " Your mother is in pain. If I don't respond in the way she wanted me to she would think I am a bad doctor and stop coming to me".
I then said, " If you respond in this way to her emotions, I will stop bringing her to your hospital. Your knowledge should guide you, not patients' emotions.
She is old and her body cannot bear so many chemicals entering her body at once. Please strike off all the unnecessary ones and use only the vital ones to treat her".
So a doctor who goes along with a patient's feelings or the emotions of their  relatives is not a good doctor. Yes, s/he should listen to what the patient is saying. Or the relatives are saying. But should always keep his or her cool and respond in the way his/her expertise says is right.
So if the doctors are not responding to your emotions, it is okay. They can't listen to each and every thing a non-expert says. They know what they should do. Trust them and try to relax. You are in the hands of an expert. A more knowledgeable person than you. That very thought should make you comfortable.
