Krishna: Science, usually is defined as the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

But there is another aspect to science too: This universe is based on scientific principles and run by them.

Originally, the word "science" (from Latin scientia) generically meant "study", "investigation", and the "knowledge" coming from them. Only later it came to denote more specifically the application of the "scientific method". So modern definition of science takes into account confirmation of science by using scientific methods and methodologies.

Scientific method involves these steps:

I must also add that the above one does not represent full scientific method. Establishing a scientific fact using scientific methods that include reproduction of results, and using it again and again in our day today work with the best results, become total. However, we should also note that it is the best available knowledge and should be subjected to revision when new data arrives.

Science works in the application mode. It also should tally with the scientific principles this universe is based on. If what we observe concurs with the universal principles of science, that itself is evidence that we got it right. If we can make things work using our new found knowledge ( inventions based on discoveries), that itself is proof we got things right.

"Scientific temper" describes an attitude which involves the application of the right reasoning, logic using scientific knowledge and above all Critical Thinking skills in everything we do. In a way it is like eating, sleeping, breathing, reading, writing, thinking and doing science each moment of our lives.

Day-to-day

Despite our frequent explanations still people don't understand these things in the way they should and ask about them over and over again. And there are several people who still put a questioning face when we talk about them! :)
