No, they can’t!
Dead bodies cannot feel heat or pain during cremation because all brain activity and nerve functions stop completely after death.
Medically and legally, brain death is officially equal to death. A dead brain cannot have feelings. To feel pain or any other sensation you need your brain and nerves to work. Nerves cannot send signals to the body without a living nervous system.
Because life has ended, the deceased has no awareness/consciousness.

How do you know that a person is brain dead?
An electroencephalogram (EEG) for a brain-dead patient shows electrocerebral inactivity, commonly known as a "flat line," meaning no electrical activity above 2 microvolts.
Key Features of a Brain-Dead EEG
Flat line (Isoelectric): No recorded brain wave amplitudes higher than 2 microvolts at high sensitivity settings.
No reactivity: The tracing shows zero response to intense external stimuli like sound or painful touch.
Technical standards: Requires a special setup with multiple scalp electrodes and a recording time of at least 30 minutes to confirm silence.
Clinical exams (such as checking for coma, missing brainstem reflexes, and an apnea test) are the primary way to diagnose brain death. Many guidelines no longer require an EEG unless mandated by local laws.
Sedatives, severe hypothermia (low body temperature), and deep metabolic imbalances can mimic a flat-line EEG and must be ruled out first.
But ….
Even though the body cannot feel anything, extreme heat (ranging from 1,400°F to 1,800°F) causes some physical changes.
Dehydration from intense heat can cause muscles and tendons to tighten or contract which may result in minor shifts in limbs. This is not because of ‘feelings’.
Sensationalized stories about groaning or screaming of dead bodies are myths. Without oxygen, energy, and a living nervous system, vocal cords cannot produce sounds.
So, once the physical body attains a brain-dead status, it can’t feel anything.
One more thing I want to add here.
People think that individuals who died because of fire accidents can feel the heat of fire. This is not true always.
A person cannot feel the heat of a fire if they are already unconscious or dead from inhaling toxic gases.
What Happens During Toxic Gas Inhalation?
Toxic smoke fills the air during a fire. This smoke contains bad gases like carbon monoxide. A person breathes in these gases. The toxic gas replaces the oxygen in the blood. The brain stops getting the oxygen it needs. The person quickly becomes unconscious (deeply asleep or knocked out).
Can the Body Feel Heat?
Before passing out: If the person is still awake and breathing, they can feel the heat and pain of the fire.
After passing out: Once the brain loses oxygen and goes to sleep, it stops working. It cannot process signals from the skin anymore.
After death: If the toxic gas kills the person before the fire reaches them, the body is completely numb and feels nothing.
So feeling the pain depends on the state of the brain.
