Krishna: “Because it changes” - if you don’t understand why the changes occur, you will say silly things only.
You can encounter two types of situations here.
When what we encounter tallies with the universal science, then science gets established, until then, it makes its progressive march.
This is progress.
If you can’t trust more refined and progressive facts based on new evidence and data and try to stick with old and outdated ones, you will stagnate. You can never improve your knowledge and cannot get the benefits of that new awareness. This is regression.
Now decide for yourself whether you want progression or regression.
In fact the very certainty that science progresses with time should be the basis for trust, not the other way round.

“How does that contrast with religious beliefs?”
There are different religions. Some are progressive and some are stagnant.
For instance, it seems the Dalai Lama once said that if scientific facts conflict with Buddhist teachings, Buddhism must change to align with those facts. That is really a progressive statement.
But some religious conservatism and fundamentalism can manifest as resistance to change, which can be interpreted as stagnation and hinder social development.
Yes, some religious people don't want to take vaccines that can save thousands of lives. They not only endanger their own lives but also those of others around them. And they give all sorts of silly reasons, conspiracy theories and retracted research work to assert their choice. They just ignore recent and more progressive scientific work.
All sorts of religious beliefs exist. Some flexible, some not so flexible and some very rigid.
Which ones you follow denotes your state of mind.
