Science, Art, Litt, Science based Art & Science Communication
Artists keep asking me some questions regarding science and art interactions. I want to give replies to as many as I can. If anybody wants to ask more questions they are welcome to add them in the form of comments.
Q 1. An artist:
I know an artist in Oceania who makes his own paper from certain kinds of bark. He grinds rocks for color, one type of rock from each of four islands. His brush is actually dried seeds from the pandanus tree.
With all of this he does the most amazing…

A VIEW ON HOW SCIENTIFIC CREATIVITY DIFFERS FROM ARTISTIC CREATIVITY AND HOW ARTISTS CAN HELP SCIENCE and the people around if they want to BY CHANGING THEIR CREATIVE MECHANISMS
The most erroneous stories are those we think we know best -- and therefore never scrutinize or question. -Stephen Jay Gould, paleontologist, biologist, author (1941-2002)
Scientists and artists are coming together very frequently these days because of the sci-art interactions. And as a keen observer of…

I have been approached by at least ten science artists and leaders of the sci-art projects from around the world in the last two months with requests to see their science -art work/ projects and send my opinions on and analyses/reviews of their work. Even though I don't have any time to spare, my enthusiasm and curiosity made me borrow some from tomorrow and venture into the worlds of artists. And what did I experience? Shock, shock, shock and more shock. You will go through the same if…

Differences between science-art (science illustration), science based art and technology assisted art
Science based art is different from technology assisted art. In technology assisted art tech is used in creating any form of art and with any theme. Science has nothing to do with this art except for assisting in creating it.
Science-art is used to communicate science through art. Even an illiterate person can understand science when shown in a picture form. That…

A VIEW FROM THE WORLD OF SCIENCE
The most erroneous stories are those we think we know best -- and therefore never scrutinize or question. -Stephen Jay Gould, paleontologist, biologist, author (1941-2002)
Tall claims are being made regarding art's contribution to the world of science. It is also being said that the combination of art and science will bring in more development in all the spheres including science and business. However, despite all the positive noises made by the…

I came across an interesting criticism which I feel should be taken seriously by all the people working in the area of science-art. Therefore I am posting it here:

With special permission from Mr. Stephen Nowlin, I am using this for my articles and book
( I have posted this criticism on Art Lab as I agree with him to some…

Earlier, we used to listen to words like landscape photography and wild life photography. Now with the popularization of science-art, the words have changed to Geo-art and Eco-art! Yes, everybody is claiming that they are into science-art!
You can see examples here:

An artist who deals with cloud - photography says that she is fascinated by nature and clouds and that "You can't make this stuff up." You can read her statement here:
http://helenglazer.com/clouds/statement.html
"Can't you, really?" is what my mind from the field of science asks. Because I knew science is not only helping artists to create clouds (…

I am getting bored! Yes, day in and day out I get to read the same headlines in journals and magazines over and over again. " Science meets art" in so and so artist's show. "Science and art come together", "Art and science collide" at this show, " science marries art" are the mirror reflections of science meets art. There is no creativity. There are no new words and new ways of explanations. And most importantly, there is no newness in science meeting art!
Yes, the day a …

We want to give information on science-art courses around the world. kkArtLab is one of the sites where you can learn about Bioptical art. This is a free course and started on experimental basis. If this succeeds - as artists find it too technical to follow and we are trying to simplify it - we will start courses in Biology and other science subject based art.
1. You can learn Bioptical art taught by Mr. Iliescu, who has more than fifty years of experience in the Bioptical art research,…

“Intellectual integrity made it quite impossible for me to accept the myths and dogmas of even very great scientists, more particularly of the belligerent and so-called advanced nations. Indeed, those intellectuals who accepted them were abdicating their functions for the joy of feeling themselves at one with the herd.”— Bertrand Russell 1872-1969.
How true!
Most of my articles I write on science, art, science-art and science based art are highly critical of the trends in the…

Recently I came across some "artscience" projects sites on internet - you can see one here: http://2011.igem.org/Team:ArtScienceBangalore and another here: http://www.artscatalyst.org/projects/detail/escapevehicle6/
. After reading the project information they gave on their website pages, I felt there is absolutely no art in them! They are completely…

Is there a necessity for an international body to deal with science-art and science based art?
Yes, there is! What is lacking in the international arena with regard to science art and science based art to start such an organization now? Aren't there enough already? Yes, there are a few science-art organizations that work at international level like the SymbioticA and…

Recently a friend of mine who deals with Maths and art combination said these words:
The art I create is made of fractals. Fractals are sets of numbers that when graphed show a repeating pattern. This is several fractals, they have been manipulated and composed into a piece of abstract art. Odd, isn't it that a mathematical construct based on abstract ideas formuated abstract art...a truly abstract painting. I worked many hours on it, in many stages on several pieces of software. I…

Somebody recently asked me this question: I am very interested to know more on mutli-disciplines of art, science and technology. How does one find an ideal profession to practice all three of these disciplines, may I ask?
My reply:
You can do an academic course to create technology assisted art. An ideal profession to practice sci-art is to become an independent sci-artist! At present there are a few academic courses to train people in this field - please see another blog of…

Coming from the field of science, I have a different set of standards and definitions for art and sometimes they are too high to the liking of some artists. Some understand, analyse and follow and some don't. I bring "Inventing or discovering something new " to the art field too and "creating something new" is my motive in art. Am I looking at art through the glass of science? Maybe I am. And I am happy with this approach because it enriches art and makes my work stand out. And I listen to…
